The meaning of our writing doesn’t survive only by the definitions of the words we use. Sometimes to get the idioms, you have to learn the whole language. A translation is always a matter of interpretation: it’s not a copy, it’s something brand new. You know that feeling when you’re trying to retell a story but it’s like…you had to be there? All writers translate, even the ones who only work in one language.
