Inside/Outside Letter Writing
Join the Abolitionist Law Center, Human Rights Coalition, & Philadelphia Muslim Freedom Fund at Writers Room for in-person letter writing to incarcerated people in Pennsylvania.
In September, we will be hearing from Philly-based youth orgs, YASP and YSRP and writing to youth and children locked up in Philly's adult jail. Currently, there are 20 youth detained at State Road, many of them for longer than a year or two and who face horrific jail conditions, including solitary confinement.
At the same time, there have been increases in children being prosecuted as adults. This is the result of Judge McDermott, who has the power to get kids out of the adult criminal justice system and back into the juvenile system, where they belong. However, she almost never does this - though she can - and is even worse than the judge before her. Abolitionist Law Center staff will speak more about our efforts to fight this through court watch.
Kids should not be charged as adults and they should not be locked up! Join us to write letters of encouragement.
