Taryn Flaherty was born and raised in Philadelphia and attended Folk-Arts Cultural Treasures Charter School in Chinatown. At the age of six, Flaherty marched against a proposed casino in Chinatown alongside my classmates, teachers, and community. 15 years later, she joined yet another Save Chinatown movement as the co-leader of Students for the Preservation of Chinatown, a coalition of college students fighting against the proposed arena next to Chinatown. This organization is composed of young people who spent their childhoods in Chinatown and who recognize the institutions in Chinatown that taught local history, empowering youth to speak up and cultivating them into strong AAPI advocates. Flaherty is inspired to continue the legacy of intergenerational activism and oral history in Chinatown.
